Few models are cut for female players: women's handball socks are mostly unisex, and it all comes down to the right size. Socks that are too big bunch up at the heel and cause blisters by the first tournament.
Low for training, mid-high or high for matches, they are also chosen according to the colour required by your club.
Socks are sold in size ranges, with one range often covering three or four sizes. If your size is on the edge of two ranges, go for the smaller one: a technical sock stretches, but a sock that's too long creates a fold in the shoe. The few women's models, which are narrower at the heel, fit a slim foot better.
Low socks, like the Blaze Pro from Hummel, are worn during training and in the gym, under short clothing. Mid-calf socks protect the ankle from rubbing against the shoe upper. High socks rise up to the knee: they are the classic match model, also protecting the lower leg when you slide on the court.
A loop area under the sole cushions the impact of jumps. Reinforcements at the heel and toe extend the lifespan where the shoe rubs. An elastic band in the middle of the foot prevents the sock from twisting, and a finer mesh on top allows heat to escape. Cotton is soft but retains moisture; synthetic fibers dry faster and reduce blisters.
The IHF regulations require all players on a team to wear the same colour socks. Any ankle support or calf sleeve must also match the sock colour. Before placing a club order, decide on the model and colour once and for all, and keep the same reference to complete the group throughout the year.
The Basic packs from Hummel, available in black or white, and the training packs from Mizuno are suitable for players who train several times a week. The Basic bicolours from Select in navy and pink or black and pink, and the Logo Classic from Kempa allow you to match your club’s colours. The colour filter on the page helps you find the right shade.
Socks are the piece that wears out the fastest: the women's sales and women's clearance allow you to restock the drawer at a low price. During Black Friday for women, think about packs for the whole team.
Choose the right size range to avoid folds, and a synthetic material that wicks moisture away. Reinforcements at the heel and toe reduce friction. A new sock should be tested in training before going to a tournament.
They work, but they are often longer, thicker, and tighter at the calf to hold a shin guard. A handball or multisport sock is thinner and more flexible in the shoe. Many clubs use both depending on the available colours.
Count at least one pair for each training session of the week, plus one pair reserved for matches in the club colours. Packs simplify this rotation. Replace a pair as soon as the heel wears down.
A mid-high or high sock protects the skin from rubbing against the ankle brace. In a match, the ankle brace should be the same colour as the socks. A thin sock keeps the ankle brace well adjusted in the shoe.
Soak them before washing in warm water with a bit of baking soda or percarbonate. Wash them inside out to remove dust and resin. Avoid bleach, which yellows synthetic fibers.
