The sweat that runs down from the forearm always ends up in the palm, and in handball, a sweaty palm doesn't grip the ball as well: that's the whole point of sweatbands, which catch it before it reaches the hand.

Simple or double width, classic sponge, fleece or breathable fabric, sold individually or in pairs.

Single or double width

A single sponge wristband covers the wrist and the lower forearm. Kempa offers its Core at nine centimetres wide, other models from the brand go up to twelve, and there is also a long pair available. The double width versions from Nike, such as the Swoosh Classic Double Wide, cover more of the forearm and absorb more sweat, and their width makes them easier to put on.

Absorbent, fleece or breathable fabric

Cotton sponge remains the classic choice. The Core from Kempa is mostly made of cotton, with some rubber and polyamide for elasticity. Nike also offers fleece versions, which are soft and absorbent, as well as Dri-FIT wristbands, whose fabric wicks moisture away.

In handball, wristbands that protect the ball grip

In handball, the hand does it all: passing, faking, shooting in mid-air. With or without resin, a damp palm loses grip. The sponge wristband stops the sweat that runs down the forearm, and serves as a handy towel to wipe the forehead between plays. Goalkeepers also wear them to keep their hands dry.

Premier and Swoosh: from gym to court

Some Nike models come from tennis, where the sponge wristband is a classic for keeping the racket grip dry. The Premier and Swoosh models are suitable for both court and gym.

Individually or in pairs

Most Nike wristbands are sold in pairs: one for each wrist, or one as a spare while the other dries. The Kempa Core is also available individually, handy for replacing just the one you've lost.

Hummel, Nike, Kempa, Select: who makes what

  • Hummel: a black and white sponge wristband in the colours of the Danish brand.
  • Nike: from simple Swoosh to Double Wide in fleece, including Premier and Dri-FIT.
  • Kempa: the Core in white, blue, or black, in various widths, for training as well as matches.
  • Select: a sponge wristband from the brand of the ball, to match your outfit.

With sponge wristbands

The headband does the same job for the forehead, and resin enhances ball grip when allowed in the hall. All the small equipment is on the accessories page, and clearance items on the clearance accessories.

Frequently asked questions

On which wrist should you wear a sponge wristband?

At minimum on the arm that holds the ball, the shooting arm. Many players wear one on each wrist, to keep both hands dry and wipe their forehead from either side.

How to wash a sponge wristband?

With your sports laundry, at a moderate temperature and without fabric softener. Wash it after each session: soaked in sweat, it quickly becomes a nest for odors.

Is a sponge wristband too tight uncomfortable?

Yes, if it leaves a deep mark or if your fingers tingle. It should fit without compressing: choose a wider or softer model if that’s the case.

Sponge wristband or wrist strap?

The sponge wristband absorbs sweat, it doesn’t support the joint. After a wrist sprain, a strap or brace is what protects it, on the advice of a healthcare professional.

How many wristbands should you plan for a season?

Two pairs allow you to wash one while the other is in use. Add a spare one in the bag: it’s the accessory that is most often forgotten in the locker room.
