For a club used to finishing in the top six of the English league at that time, the 1977 - 78 season was somewhat disappointing for Ipswich, with a modest 18th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

However, few supporters were truly worried, as this season was mainly marked by a superb run in the FA Cup, culminating in a memorable victory at Wembley. Cardiff City, Hartlepool, Bristol Rovers, Millwall and West Bromwich Albion were all eliminated before a final against Arsenal. The London club was favourites, but it was Ipswich Town who brought home the trophy thanks to a decisive goal from Roger Osborne in the second half.
