After several solid seasons, the 1996-97 campaign proved to be tougher for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Swedish striker Martin Dahlin left for Roma and his absence was felt during the early months of the season, as the team fell into the relegation zone.

Dahlin paired well with Andrzej Juskowiak and other new players, such as Robert Enke and Ioan Lupescu, began to make their mark as the season progressed.
